Sparkassen Immobilien AG: Sun Plaza shopping centre in Bucharest opens direct access to subway system

Corporate news

The first direct connection between a Romanian shopping centre and the city’s subway system was taken into service on 16 June 2010. Sun Plaza, the biggest shopping centre in Romania, was built by Sparkassen Immobilien AG and opened very successfully in February of this year.

“Direct access to the subway through its own passage is a unique and important distinction for Sun Plaza. Public transport is bound to play an increasingly important role in Bucharest in future,” is how Friedrich Wachernig of Sparkassen Immobilien AG’s Management Board explains the outstanding importance of the new infrastructure connection.

In addition to the subway, Sun Plaza is very easily accessible via more than 20 tram and bus routes, and there are a total of 2,000 parking places on two levels for shoppers arriving by car.

Sun Plaza: 200m euro investment in household shopping, lifestyle, entertainment and community

Together with project partner EMCT, Sparkassen Immobilien AG has over the last three years created a wholly new kind of shopping centre in Romania, located in the South of Bucharest between two main traffic arteries on a 208,000 m2 site. Designed by renowned English architects Chapman & Taylor, Sun Plaza has not only an outstanding mix of tenants and a unique location but now also an excellent transport link in the form of an exceptional subway connection.

Sun Plaza’s more than 80,000 m2 of lettable space offers its visitors three types of amenities: businesses catering to daily shopping needs, a wide range of international fashion and lifestyle brands and a comprehensive selection of entertainment and leisure facilities. An outstanding feature is the provision of social and community facilities, including a kindergarten, a playground, a sports and concert hall and the new Cinema City, which was officially opened on Friday, 18 June.

With a total investment volume of around EUR 200 million, Sun Plaza is Sparkassen Immobilien AG’s development project ever.
